When I first bumped into the ketogenic diet definition, I thought this concept was a joke. No, really.
I thought “why would anyone wanting to get rid of excessive fat in their body would intentionally eat even more fat?”
For me, this is like managing wildfire with a flame thrower, or to fight the flood pouring more water into the body of water. Insane.
Do you actually know the mechanism the ketogenic diet plan is promised to use?
Here it is, as stated everywhere:
“Carbs are bad for the body because they cause diabetes. Fats are good because they do not cause diabetes. Therefore, it is better to remove carbs and add fats. In absence of carbs, the body will burn fats”.
Yes, this scheme is possible, but… just think a second about it.
Isn’t it a bit… too complicated?
Isn’t it a bit of a stretch?
If I want to remove the excess of sugars from my blood, I will avoid sugars in diet.
If I want to remove the excess of proteins, I will avoid proteins.
So why the hell am I expected to INCREASE the amount of fat in the diet if I want to get rid of fat in the body???
It is like getting into the house through the second floor window when the door is open.
It makes some sense, of course, because in the absence of carbs the body really starts to burn fats. However, it is really SO healthy and natural?
Ketosis: What “Ketogenic” Really Means
Just in case you thought ketosis is the process of any fats burning, well, no.
Any fats burning is called “lipid metabolism”. You can double-check the Wikipedia.
Lipid metabolism is the process of fats, or lipids, splitting into simpler chemical elements, interacting with other elements in the body.
There are several types of lipids and several types of processes they go through.
Ketosis is not included.
Because ketosis is not a completely healthy condition for the body.
Ketosis is a metabolic condition of the body when the body uses products of fats disintegration – ketones – as source of energy. Pay attention – not FATS, but products of fats’ disintegration.
Ketosis starts in the body when all resources of sugars (that are very limited in the body) are exhausted. The body prefers carbs as energy source, so when it is short in carbs, it is FORCED to burn fats.
Ketosis is not the condition the body prefers. It is the evolutionary adaptation of the body to situation when much of the food is gone, and the body needs to survive.
In other words, in ketosis, the body is constantly surviving. Not thriving.
Ketosis is characterised by a higher concentration of the ketone bodies in blood. When the percent of these ketone bodies exceeds the allowable level, ketosis turns into ketoacidosis.
Have you ever heard the term “keto flu”? Sounds so innocent, right?
Ketoacidosis is already a pathological state of uncontrolled ketosis, that can even result in death if unaddressed.
What Is Keto Flu And Why It Is Dangerous
Keto flu is a nice name for a dangerous health condition when the amount of ketone bodies in blood exceeds the allowable level. The result is shifting of the body pH levels to the acidic side, making the whole body more acidic than alcaline, and messing up metabolism completely.
The number of ketones is so high that the body starts making efforts to get rid of them, pushing them through the skin, lungs, and with urine. The person suffering from ketoacidosis, or “keto flu”, starts smelling like acetone.
Have you ever smelled a nail polish remover? That’s the smell of keto flu, and it does not seem to be healthy at all.
Interestingly, it is stated that ketogenic diet foods prevents from developing diabetes, however, diabetes can actually cause ketoacidosis – keto flu – the same way as ketogenic diet can.
Does it mean ketogenic diet is almost as dangerous as diabetes?..
I remember I had child ketoacidosis when I was 4 or 5 years old. I was constantly feeling sick, tired, I was vomiting constantly, and could not eat anything. I suffered a heavy dehydration because of vomiting, and was exhausted because I could not eat, which aggravated the ketosis even more. Honestly, this is not the best condition at all.
I was treated by vegetable diet and low fat meals.
Why Ketogenic Diet Plan Overcomplicates Things
As I have already stated, ketogenic diet definition is “the diet that makes the body burn fats”.
But this is a lie. Or, rather this is only half-truth.
Keto diet is a mode of eating that makes the body burn ONLY fats, and this is a big difference.
The truth is, the body constantly burns fats, in the process of lipid metabolism.
It burns fats to provide nutrition to the skin and hair, to serve the organs, to process the chemical transformations in the body.
You do not need to starve yourself of carbs to force the body to start burning fats.
It already burns fats for you, every day. The amount is just too small to notice immediately.
If you take effort to decrease the amount of fats you consume, the body will slowly burn the fats it stores, without making you change the diet and risk your wellbeing.
Of course, there are hundreds of people who follows ketogenic diet plan and manages to lose weight. All these people are fit enough to enter the house through the second floor window.
But maybe it makes sense to walk through the door?
